DESCRIPTION OF TRAINING CONTENTS

Preparation
Participants are expected to have at least a basic user-level Information Communication Technologies (ICT) competence. In the preliminary phase, which starts 4 weeks prior to the face-to-face session, participants get basic information about blended learning. They will be requested to complete an online questionnaire about their personal and academic profile as well as their expectations and goals for this seminar. They will also have the first opportunity (optional) to get to know their fellow course attendants and experience the role of the e-learner.

In this preparatory phase, participants are also provided with the necessary travel information for Patras, Greece and are guided in how to use successfully tools and instruments, supported by an e-tutor. By doing so, they already get in contact with technical tools suitable for blended learning courses (e.g. Skype, Dimdim) and they start to familiarize themselves with the Learning Activities Management System (LAMS).

Objectives

  • After completing the course participants should be able:
  • to describe four differences between online and blended learning
  • to define five roles required for an e-tutor
  • to identify four main types of e-tutor activities
  • to practice the core technical skills of the e-tutor
  • to design sequences of learning activities and create web-based and blended courses
  • to make the choices you need to take into account when supporting learners
  • to monitor and assess Learner’s progress in virtual learning environments
  • to self-improve on the development of multimedia teaching and learning material
  • to gain practical skills in the production of worksheets for e-learners
  • to reflect on their learning within the course
  • to evolve from a traditional "lecturer" to a "facilitator"
  • to share and adapt sequences of learning activities and best practices

Methodology

The course is based on the principles of adult education and open & distance learning and will include introduction to the key-concepts, case studies, collaborative learning and hands-on workshops. Particular emphasis will be placed in the design, upload and sharing of learning activities and lessons.

The course will follow a blended learning approach combining a face to face (F2F) five days workshop with e-learning preparation and follow-up sessions.

Follow-up

After the course there will be maintained contact with the participants. They will continue to have access to the Learning Activity Management System and to the course’s training portal. During the weeks following the training courses, the participants will have the opportunity to further apply what they have learnt by producing their own sequences of learning activities, sharing them through the establishment of an e-tutors community of practice.
